Restoring Marine Glass: Today marks the beginning of an exciting and challenging project: our first foray into working on a cargo ship. The ship, docked at the bustling Port of Melbourne, presented a unique set of challenges that required careful planning and innovative problem-solving.

The Challenge

As part of modifications made to the ship, angle grinders were used above the bridge. Unfortunately, this resulted in a cascade of sparks raining down onto the glass windows surrounding the bridge. The marine glass in question is no ordinary material; it’s 50 mm thick and has thin heating elements within to endure the rigors of maritime environments. Replacing this specialized glass would be an incredibly costly endeavor, making restoration the optimal solution.

Our Inspection

During our initial inspection, we assessed the extent of the damage caused by the angle grinder burns. The glass bore marks and imperfections that needed to be addressed with precision and care. We submitted a detailed quote for the restoration work, outlining the steps needed to remove the damage and restore the glass to its former clarity and functionality.

The Plan

Given the scope of the project, this isn’t a task that can be completed in a single session. Instead, we’ve structured the work to be tackled over one or two days each week while the ship arrives back to dock. This approach ensures minimal disruption to the ship’s operations and allows us to deliver consistent, high-quality results.

The Restoration Process

Restoring marine glass of this size and thickness requires specialized techniques and equipment. Each step must be performed with precision to avoid introducing new damage while effectively removing the burns. Our team will carefully polish and treat the glass, layer by layer, ensuring that the structural integrity of the glass remains uncompromised.

Why This Matters

Marine glass plays a critical role in the safe operation of a ship, particularly in the bridge area, where visibility is paramount. By restoring the glass rather than replacing it, we’re helping to preserve the ship’s functionality while saving significant costs. This project is also an opportunity to demonstrate our expertise in handling complex and large-scale restoration tasks.

Looking Ahead

As we embark on this large project, we’re excited about the opportunity to deliver exceptional results for the ship’s operators. The work will be challenging, but it’s precisely the kind of challenge that drives us to innovate and excel. Stay tuned as we document our progress and share insights from the restoration journey.
