At Melbourne Glass Polishing, we understand that the concept of polishing scratches out of glass may be new to many people. Naturally, you may have questions about whether this service is right for your particular job. Whether you have minor scratches or significant damage, we’re here to help. By choosing to repair rather than replace your glass panels, you can often save hundreds — even thousands — of dollars, while restoring your glass to near-new condition.
No. All repairs are carried out with the glass in-situ.
Yes. We can remove even very severe water spotting. Both on exterior windows and interior glass showers. We can repair any type of flat glass as long as it is not broken.
Yes. We believe the glass scratch removal process is unequaled in removing these two types of vandalism. First, because the system is fast and works deep especially for large areas of graffiti. Secondly, the system provides consistently excellent results, meaning glass clarity and lack of observable distortion.
Yes! Scratches are easily removed just like graffiti scratches which are often deeper. We routinely work for contractors, property managers & homebuilders. They are ecstatic to spend a fraction of what they used to spend to replace glass. The repairs are made on site, without taking the glass out.
The definition of a deep glass scratch can vary depending on the individual. A glazier who primarily replaces glass might consider any noticeable scratch too deep to repair. An inexperienced glass polisher might believe that any scratch catching the fingernail is too deep (a common perception found online). Generally, a scratch leaving a ragged edge, where tiny chips have broken out of the glass, is over 100 microns deep. Experienced glass polishers routinely remove such scratches unless they are too close to the edge. The most severe type of glass damage is known as “angle grinder splatter” or “spatter” in British terminology, typically exceeding 500 microns in depth. For information on whether this damage can be removed, please refer to our angle grinder splatter page.
Polishing glass is mostly a wet process, so it does not create dust. However, the initial stages use a dry abrasive, which can produce dust. We take extra care to protect surrounding surfaces, often spending more time on dust control than polishing. Clients frequently praise how clean their premises are left.
Yes, it is possible. The tint is integrated into the glass itself rather than being applied on top. Removing a thin layer through a cutting process does not affect the tint. For instance, many modern cars come with factory-tinted glass, and scratches in these panels can typically be removed without issue. However, for those who have aftermarket tint films applied to their car glass, scratches in the film usually cannot be repaired and the film will need to be replaced.
Yes – We regularly remove scratches from curved glass for our customers. Our technicians are trained to work on curved glass, including both automotive and architectural applications. Our system is light, compact, and can access places that were previously considered out of reach.
Yes. It is possible to repair scratches on tempered glass efficiently due to the glass density. Our scratch removal system is effective on laminated, curved, plate, and mirrored glass as well. We can handle any thickness of glass, including single glazing strength.
No – The scratch has already caused a strain in the silica lattice and weakened the glass. If scratched glass is subjected to impacts or stresses, it will often crack in the area where the scratch is located. Therefore, when the scratches are polished out, this weakness is removed, and the break resistance is restored to about 90-95% of its original value.
While some may claim that deep glass scratches cannot be repaired, the truth is they can. However, it requires a skilled operator because repairing deep scratches (over 100 microns) involves removing a lot of glass. This increases the risk of uneven abrasion and distortion. Therefore, deep scratch repairs should be handled by experts to avoid distorting the glass.
All types of glass can be repaired using our glass polishing systems. Toughened, Plate, Tempered, Float, Laminated, Mirrored, Colored, Curved, Smart and even Bullet proof glass can all be polished. The only exception – if glass has been coated it cannot be polished without removing the coating.
We expertly remove all traces of polishing. Professionals not only eliminate the glass damage but also any signs of it, making detection by an expert rare.
Glass scratch and stain removal involves a cut and polish process. “Cutting” refers to the use of abrasives to remove a thin layer of glass. The depth of the scratch determines how much glass needs to be removed. This process initially creates more scratches in the glass, which are gradually minimized by using increasingly finer abrasives. “Polishing” then removes the haze created by the finest abrasives used previously.
